Essay Sociology Manifest and Latent Functions - 1035 Words

A large topic in sociology is the concept of manifest and latent functions; a manifest function is simply the known or anticipated results of an action, while a latent function is the unknown (at the time) and unanticipated results of the action (Macionis, 2013, pg. 13). To make it really simple say I ate twelve cookies. Why? Because I like the flavor and expect them to taste yummy (manifest function), but I did not intend on getting a stomach ache afterwards (latent function). There are manifest and latent functions for everything that we do in life, but what are the manifest and latent functions for taking Introduction to Sociology with Dr. Weber at 10:05 A.M. every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday until February? For me personally I†¦show more content†¦On top of having more time to study and spend in church and doing God’s work, I also get more time to spend with my husband (as we will married in March). Roughly six hours a week plus study and homework time that I put into this course will then be freed up, and I will than have that time for everything else, even though it will still feel like there are not enough hours in the day. I took this class knowing a little of what Dr. Weber would be like as a teacher. I look up all of my classes on RateMyProfessor.com. I expected to have a relaxed class with study guides for tests, extra credit opportunities, a really good teacher, and an opportunity to get an A in the class with less effort and need to study than my anatomy and physiology or genetics courses. I love having morning classes, but I will make any schedule around a teacher that I want; so as a result I had to have a night class with a teacher that seems to be stricter and favor certain students in order to be in this particular sociology class with Dr. Weber. I did not intend originally on having any night classes, but as a result of taking this sociology class Evan and I have Kinesiology at night. This could be considered as only a latent function, but because of the time of the sociology class during the day I assumed that my schedule may not be completely favorable this semester.
